Sideways photos are usually an EXIF orientation problem rather than a real one: the camera recorded the rotation as metadata, and some applications honour that flag while others ignore it. The result is an image that looks correct in one program and rotated in another. Physically rotating the pixels fixes it everywhere, permanently.

Why do my photos appear sideways in some apps but not others?
Cameras store an orientation value in EXIF metadata rather than rotating the pixels. Applications that read that flag display the image correctly; those that ignore it show the raw, rotated pixels. Rotating here rewrites the actual pixels, so every application agrees.
Does rotating lose quality?
