Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I open AVIF files on my computer?
AVIF is recent enough that many operating systems and applications have not added support. Windows requires an optional codec extension, and older macOS versions cannot preview it at all. Converting to JPG sidesteps the problem entirely.
Will the JPG look worse than the AVIF?
At 90% quality or above the difference is very hard to see. AVIF achieves smaller files at similar quality, so the JPG will be bigger — not necessarily worse-looking.
Does this handle transparent AVIF images?
Transparency cannot survive the conversion, since JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent areas become white. If you need transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
