About the GST Calculator Tool
India’s Goods and Services Tax applies at four main slabs — 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% — and the arithmetic runs in two directions. Adding GST to a base price is straightforward multiplication. Extracting GST from an inclusive price is where mistakes happen, because you cannot simply take 18% of the total.
This calculator handles both directions and shows the CGST and SGST split, which is what appears on an intra-state invoice. For inter-state supply the equivalent amount appears as a single IGST line. Calculation runs instantly in your browser.

Things Worth Knowing
- For intra-state supply, GST splits equally into CGST and SGST. Inter-state supply uses a single IGST at the full rate.
- To remove GST from an inclusive amount, divide by (1 + rate), not subtract the rate.
- Rates and classifications change — verify the applicable slab for your specific goods or services.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For 18% GST on an inclusive ₹1180, divide by 1.18 to get ₹1000 base, making the GST ₹180. Subtracting 18% of ₹1180 gives ₹212.40, which is wrong.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
On intra-state supply, GST splits equally between Central GST and State GST — 18% becomes 9% CGST and 9% SGST. On inter-state supply, the full 18% is charged as Integrated GST instead.
Which GST rate applies to my product?
It depends on the HSN or SAC classification. 5% covers essentials, 12% and 18% cover most goods and services, and 28% applies to luxury and demerit goods. Check the official rate schedule or consult a tax professional.
Is GST calculated on the discounted price?
Yes, when the discount is shown on the invoice and given at the time of supply. GST applies to the transaction value after such discounts.
